N.A.G. EDUCATION STILL 'JUST AS GOOD' 59 YEARS LATER
There are not many things that are just as good as they were when approaching 60, but a chance meeting with a former student shows that N.A.G. education never gets old. N.A.G. member John D'Arcy showed current course tutor Anne Bray an essay he had written when completing his Retail Jeweller's Diploma 59 years ago, when they bumped into each other last week
"I was delighted to read John's outstanding work" said Anne Bray "this essay is just as good as the ones we receive today".
The essay entitled 'Fine Costume Jewellery - their supply and demand' not only helped John secure his diploma, but also won him a prize; an all expenses paid trip to London and a tour of Goldsmiths' Hall. John, who had been resisting the move into the family jewellery business, credits the trip with changing his mind, and leading to a lifetime in the industry.
John spoke to Anne at a Hallmarking seminar, coincidentally also held at Goldsmith's Hall, as he prepared for retirement from J W D'Arcy Ltd, Peterborough.
A lot has changed in the last 59 years. The average house price was a mere £1,911, rationing was still in force, Wolverhampton won the FA Cup and the Republic of Ireland, Federal Republic of Germany and People's Republic of China were born.
In 1999 the Retail Jewellers Diploma became the Professional Jewellers Diploma. For more information go to www.jewellers-online.org or call 020 7613 4445.
