Meet the Tutors
I am married with two children and was educated at Latymer Upper Grammar School.
I joined the trade and served a five-year apprenticeship as a watchmaker, and after qualification became a Fellow of The British Horological Institute. I studied Gemmology at Chelsea Polytechnic under such distinguished gemmologists as Robert E.Webster, Basil W.Anderson, Alexander E.Farn, Dr.Ernest H. Rutland, and Cecil J. Payne, qualified with distinction, and became a Fellow of The Gemmological Association of Great Britain.
I worked for an independent Jewellers in West End of London for twenty five years, followed by four years with a small multiple chain as manager of their flagship branch, during which time I studied the Retail Jewellers Training Scheme run by the National Association of Goldsmiths, qualifying with distinction, and undertook The National Association of Goldsmiths Management Course, gaining a diploma, and also undertook courses on “Techniques of Instruction and Coaching” organised by the Distributive Industries Training Board. Following six weeks with Ernest Jones whilst between jobs, my career was finished with nineteen years as a branch manager for a prestigious independent Jewellers.
I commenced work as a tutor for The National Association of Goldsmiths Retail Jewellery Course in 1985 and was heavily involved in revisions made to this course and in the introduction of the Retail Gemstone Course in 1995. Over the years my hobbies have included gardening, d.i.y., fishing, photography, dancing, tennis, bridge and more recently golf (which I play very badly). Before retiring from full time employment I had never possessed a passport and consequently had never ventured from these shores, but in the last few years have made up for this with trips to France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, America, Canada, South Africa and even Australia.
