 Professional Jewellers

This course provides those in the industry with an understanding of the appearance, properties and major features of the gemstones they are most likely to encounter in the business. The course focuses on the need of the industry and the bias is thus towards understanding and selling more than science.

The course is a home-study training medium, and is studied over a maximum period of twelve months.

The principal aims of the course are to enable jewellers to:

Converse knowledgeably and interestingly with their customers:
Use and understand correct terminology;
Advise customers about the suitability and care of gems;
Understand and be able to explain what affects 'quality' and thus value;
Have an understanding of birth and anniversary gemstones, history and the various myths that can add interest to a gem;
Understand and carry out essential testing procedures to indicate the identity of gemstones and to help distinguish between natural, synthetic and imitation gemstones;

Course Content

  • The basic principles of physics and optics where relevant to gems explained in an interesting and useful manner.
